Career Center Hopes to Reach Out to More Students

On Monday the Schroeder Career Center held a special presentation in Goodrich Hall explaining how to use the resources on WabashWorks! correctly and efficiently. Student workers at the Career Center, as well as Career Center Advisors, did the presentation for a classroom filled with around fifty students.

The Career Center does many presentations and workshops like this throughout the year and the advisors want more students to be active in these because not only can they help students get great internships, but they also help students learn how to use the fantastic resources the College has for them.

Director of Career Services Scott Crawford would like for students to become more involved in these workshops because he has seen how they have aided in countless acquisitions of internships.

“We get more internship opportunities than we have students and we have more internship opportunities than students take advantage of and it’s not that hard to do that,” Crawford said. “It does take time to get a good internship, but they really need to talk to us and explore the ways to find an opportunity. There are so many opportunities out there that haven’t been tapped yet.”

Schroeder Career Center Internship Coordinator Kyle Dunaway reiterated what Mr. Crawford said. Mr. Dunaway believes that these kinds of Career Center activities are not only profitable for students, but for the Schroeder Career Center as well.

“I think having the workshops and themed weeks are important because it gives us the opportunity to reach out to a broader amount of students and to students who wouldn’t normally respond to their e-mails that we send out daily,” Dunaway said.

The Career Center has many upcoming events this week and Mr. Dunaway hopes that the campus will embrace these and join in on these experiences that can teach students a thing or two.

“Major upcoming events this week include Mary Jane Pories speaking on leadership and improvisation as a leader skill tonight at 7pm in Korb Classroom, an Internship Search Skills Workshop Thursday afternoon at 12pm in Goodrich 109, and a really cool event called Beers for Cheers which is hosted by the Sphinx Club and will allow students to network with alums,” Dunaway said. “Some upcoming themed weeks will include a non-profit government week and a marketing week.”

Mr. Crawford wanted to stress the importance of setting up appointments with Career Center Advisors to help go over and help finalize the perfect resume and cover letter. He said that too many students miss great opportunities because their resumes and cover letters are done improperly, contain trivial information, or simply because students just don’t have either to start their search for internships.

“If you don’t come see us and you have a substandard resume or cover letter, which are not that easy to do the first time, you’re really wasting your time,” Crawford said. “You want to tailor your resume and cover letter to show your passion for that industry and you can apply all day long and if you have mistakes, you won’t get anywhere. Plus, it’s the only time in your life when you can talk about how great you are and not get ridiculed for it.”

The Schroeder Career Center will continue to promote its upcoming events this week with continuous e-mails to help ensure that as many students as possible know of theses great opportunities. Students are highly recommended to attend these presentations and workshops because they can aid in the search for an internship and have the ability to help students improve on their social and work skills.

“I don’t care if a student wants to be a blacksmith or a physicist or anything in between,” Crawford said. “We have something that we can work with them on to give them a personal experience. That’s why they went to a small school – to get personal attention – because if we know them we can really help them.”

The Schroeder Career Center is open Monday through Friday from 8am-4pm and 7-10pm Monday through Thursday.
