Dr. Frank Boyd is the associate dean of the faculty at Illinois Wesleyan University. He received his PhD in political science from Emory University, where he began his work in assessment with the Carter Center’s Atlanta Project. Since his arrival at IWU in 1995, Frank has been involved in assessment both as a faculty member and administrator. He served as chair of the Department of Political Science and was appointed to two terms as IWU’s director of General Education.
Frank also has experience with external and inter-institutional assessment, recently with the College Learning Assessment (CLA). From 2003–2006, he served on the Illinois Board of Higher Education’s Faculty Advisory Council. Over the past three years he has been involved with a Teagle-sponsored collaborative between Illinois Wesleyan and five other liberal arts institutions. The six institutions have combined the CLA with blind scoring of student papers to assess the writing and critical thinking skills of students. The effort has also used survey instruments such as the National Study of Student Engagement (NSSE) to examine the correlates of student performance on the CLA.
