Netters Knock Off 19th-Ranked Transylvania

Wabash swept Transylvania University 9-0 Saturday evening in collegiate tennis after losing 8-1 to nationally-ranked Kenyon College in the morning matches. The Lords are 23rd nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, while Transylvania came into the weekend ranked 19th in the Central Region poll.

The Little Giants opened the match against Transylvania with an 8-6 win by Jay Horrey and Will Pelak at number one doubles. Luke Bielawski and Ryan Tennyson combined for an 8-2 victory in the second flight of doubles play. Sean Clerget and Luke Robbins were 8-6 winners at third doubles.

Pelak picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at number singles to continue the perfect streak. Bielawski made short work of his number two singles match, winning 6-1, 6-1. Horrey took a 6-0, 6-3 victory at third singles, while Tennyson scored a 6-2, 6-0 win at fourth singles. Ricky Ritter won the final match of the night with a 6-2, 6-0 score at fifth singles. Jacob Castilow won sixth singles by default.

Bielawski won the only match for the Little Giants in the morning session, The freshman earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at second singles against Kenyon's Daniel Becker.

"I was impressed with the way we played against Transylvania after losing a tough match against Kenyon in the morning," head coach Jason Hutchison said. "We came out played very good tennis against a regionally-ranked opponent.

"We played hard against Kenyon. We could have been as close as 5-4 in the final score. That was a very good win for Luke Bielawski. Jay Horrey was up 4-1 in the third set, and Ryan Tennyson played an excellent first set. Doubles play was the key. We lost by a total of four games in two flights."

Wabash (2-1, 0-1 NCAC) will be at home against Wooster and Wheaton on Saturday.
