Lambert's Last Chance His Best Chance

Senior Geoff Lambert posted the second-fastest time in Division III in the men's 800-meter run at Friday night's DePauw Indoor Last Chance Qualifier to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA National Championship Meet.

Lambert (right) easily won the event with a time 1:52.70, equalling the qualifying time of Ohio Northern's Jimmy O'Brien. Peter Kosgei of Hamilton College has the fastest time of the year in the 800 with a mark of 1:52.42. All three runners are the only athletes who have reached the automatic qualifying time of 1:52.90 this season. O'Brien edged Lambert at last year's indoor nationals at Rose-Hulman.

Freshman Rob Smallman also competed in an effort to improve his qualifying mark in the pole vault. He finished second after clearing 4.55 meters (14 feet, 11 inches). Smallman has already cleared 4.86 meters (15 feet, 11-1/4 inchest) for a provisional qualifying mark.

Hugh Jackson was second in the mile run with a time of 4:23.72.

The NCAA Division III Indoor National Championship Meet will take place March 14-15 at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio.
