Tankers Take First Victory of the Season with 118-83 Victory over Illinois Wesleyan

The Wabash College swimming and diving team took first place in seven of 12 events as the Little Giants defeated Illinois Wesleyan 118-83 in the Class of 1950 Natatorium on Friday night. The victory was the first for Peter Casares as the head coach at Wabash.

Junior Brett Findley (Bargersville, IN/Franklin Community) took two first-place finishes for Wabash, touching first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.88. He also took first place in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing in 2:06.91. The Little Giants took the top three spots in the 200 freestyle as Dennis Bowers (Seymour, IN/Seymour) was second (1:54.04), while Steve Birrer (Indianapolis, IN/Brownsburg) took third (1:55.72).

Sophomore Colin Fahey (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard) was first in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the pad in 23.26 just ahead of teammate Mike Brickman (Richmond Heights, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin School). Brickman, swimming in his first collegiate dual meet, finished in 23.33.

Ben Hewitt (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) finished first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.87). Freshman Jeddah Wegerhoff (Avon, IN/Avon) was second in the event, finishing in 2:14.64. Local product Brandon Peacock (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) took first place in the 100-yard freestyle (51.48), ahead of Birrer in second place (51.59). Bowers added a first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.69), while freshman teammate Matt Perkins (Indianapolis, IN/Brownsburg) was second (2:09.20).

Wabash won both relays in the meet. The team of Bowers, Fahey, Findley, and Peacock took first in the 400-yard medley relay, finishing in 3:51.39. Collins, Brickman, Birrer, and Peacock combined for a top finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:28.13).

Wabash is 1-0 in dual meets this season. The Little Giant return to the water on Saturday, November 9 at home against Transylvania. The meet begins at 2 p.m. in the Class of 1950 Natatorium.
