The nametags and folders went fast Friday morning when the Admissions Office and the rest of the College kicked-off the biggest weekend of the spring semester.
Wabash rolled out the red carpet for approximately 350 high school students and their families. The students who came from 30 states and multiple foreign countries hope to put their names on some of the $3.5 million in scholarship money up for grabs over the weekend. Of those in attendance, 60 students are visiting campus for the first time.
While prospective students were at Wabash they had the opportunity to tour campus, meet and interact with many of the Wabash student organizations at the Activities Fair, tour fraternities and residence halls, talk with coaches and student athletes, and enjoy concerts and other entertainment. On Saturday, Honor Scholarship Weekend participants took more tests, then watched Wabash's baseball and track and field teams in action. Click here to see the baseball photos and here to see pictures from the Wabash Relays.
In addition, the high school seniors took a series of academic exams in English, history or foreign languages, math, and science in hopes of taking home as much as $20,000 per year in scholarship money for their upcoming four years at Wabash.
"We received 1,300 applications for 250 spots. Nearly 200 of you will be here in this spot again when Dr. White rings in the Class of 2012 on August 23," Dean of Admissions Steve Klein remarked during his welcome in the Chapel on Friday morning.
"This weekend is designed to help you get to know us better – as individuals and as a community," he continued. "I strongly encourage you to fully participate in this weekend to see if Wabash College is the place for you."
Dean Klein was followed by President of the College Pat White.
"I love the excitement in this room – the excitement of the adventure of this weekend, the excitement of the adventure of college," he commented. "As you decide where to go for college, seek more than a credential. Seek a place that honors learning, honors work, and honors relationships. Go to a place that allows you to find the greatness within you.
"Many of you will become our Men of Wabash, our heroes, our champions for the rest of your lives. Next fall as I talk with alumni I will brag about you, ‘the Class of 2012 has greatness within them.’ Together we will become a band of brothers, a company of heroes."
Activities continued throughout the weekend and concluded with breakfast on Sunday.
