Adam Petro made the most of his opening swim at the 2008 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships witha personal-best time of 50.80 in the prelims of the 100 butterfly.
The sophomore All-American finished 23rd overall, which will not let him advance to Friday night's finals. He did, however, come close to the Wabash school record of 50.67 set by Steve Turk '91.
"The personal best in his first swim was a very good start to the meet," assistant coach Kyle Dunaway said after the morning session. "Adam's goggles filled with water which certainly didn't help his efforts. Considering this was his off event, I think it bodes well for what he can accomplish on Saturday."
Petro will compete in the 200-yard backstroke and and the 200-yard butterfly Saturday, the two events in which he qualified for the meet. He is seeded 15th in the backstroke with an entry time of 1:53.45. His entry time of 1:52.18 in the 200 fly has him seeded 13th.
