Best Special Issue

-         First – "Back to Campus 2007"

o       "Comprehensive back-to-school issue chock full of information on issues, people to know and new instructors. It even includes a feature on summer reading by faculty members. A tremendous resource for students."

-         Second – "The Inauguration of Patrick White"

o       Engaging look at the inauguration of the college’s president, including his favorite movies. What sets the issue apart, though, are the historical sketches of the college’s other fourteen presidents. Impressive work.

Best Stand-Alone/Pullout Section

-         First – Patrick Smith, Elijah Sanders and Chad Simpson – Monon Bell/Founders Week

o       Impressive use of photos, old and new, to tell a brief history of the college. Lots of quotes juxtaposed with photos make it a winner

Best Breaking News Story

-         First - Gary James – Venis, Clerget in Tie shocker

o       Timely account of an unusual election. Lots of quotes from a wide variety of students

Best in Depth Story

-         First - Patrick Smith – Faculty survey reveals two worlds

o       Impressive job of obtaining a document the administration didn’t intend to release. Good interpretation of raw data

Best Staff Editorial

-         Second - Patrick Smith – CFO stonewalls financial information

o       Nice job holding administrators feet to the fire. Reasoned, civil but still tough-minded.

-         Third - Patrick McAlister and Josh Harris – Bachelor busts bookstore trust

o       Measured challenge to bookstore monopoly. Editorial suggests room for compromise.

Best Opinion Column

-         First – Chad Simpson – The problem with gay blood

o       Uncompromising look at discrimination. Good enterprise reporting as well as straight forward writing.

Best Sports Column

-         Second - Chuck Summers – Another instant classic

o       Infectious enthusiasm for a surprisingly successful team. Effective use of very short sentences

Best Entertainment Column

-         Second – Kyle Cassidy – 

o       Lots of humor in off-beat review. Good job of discussing the actors and their various contributions.

Best Sports News Story

-         Second – Chuck Summers – Battle for the bell

o       Excellent preview of the season’s big game. Good focus on a backup quarterback who must step in for the regular starter

Best News or Features Story

-         Second - Patrick McAlister, Chris Nelson and Jacob Clough – Meet the Interns

o       Entertaining personality profiles of foreign language interns. Good effort to find a unique angle for each intern

-         Third – Rob Fenoglio – Master plan under way

o       Long range planning may lack sex appeal but has big time consequences for students. Good job previewing the planning process

Best Overall Design

-         First – The Bachelor Staff – Back to School Issue

o       Good use of color and cutouts on page one. Sports pages are easy to get in to, with dominant art as well as info boxes and a smaller photo to grab the eye. Nice use of mug shots with new faculty and summer reads stories too. Photos are clear and look good.

Best Front Page

-         Second – Clayton Craig – Chapel Sing 2007

o       An unusual page, dominated by the photo of a man with a painted face singing, but it works, thanks to the quality of the photo and the use of reverse text on the headline

Best Sports Page

-         First – Chuck Summers – Bringing the Passion

o       This page looks professionally designed from the cutout photo to the 2007 little giant football schedule at the bottom of the page. Outstanding work that would be honored with an award in any division of competition

-         Second – Chuck Summers – Battle for the Bell

o       Well designed page about the big rivalry game. Placing story between the headline and photo ties the package together neatly. Well done.

Best Feature Page

-         Third - Patrick McAlister and Clayton Craig – Martinez finds ‘Real America’ at Wabash

o       Solid design with a good headline, well packaged with a dominant photo

Best Feature Photo

-         Third – Clayton Craig – Chapel Sing 2007

o       Excellent portrait. The angle, shooting slightly up at the subject gives the reader the feeling that the subject is lifting his voice to the heavens.

Best Sports Photo

-         Second – Elijah Sanders – Dannic Gets Tossed

o       Sharp stop-action shot of quarterback winging the ball downfield under pressure. What makes this shot is the defender leaping high at the right of the frame in a vain attempt to knock down the ball.

Best Photo Essay or Picture Story

-         First – Clayton Craig – Introducing Your New Photo Editor

o       Five excellent photos, including the effective use of dominant art in design, make this a top notch story. The shooter has an uncanny eye fro interesting landscapes and nature. Good use of lighting too. Effective use of white space allows the page to breathe.  

Best Editorial Cartoon

-         Third – Dick Page – Welcome to Ashcroft’s lemonade

o       Innovative design with multiple panels. Clever take on a national issue
