Wabash opened the first day of the Great Lakes Colleges Association Men's Tennis Tournament with a 5-4 win over Hope College Friday afternoon at Denison. The Little Giants fell to nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon 5-2 in the second round.
The Little Giants took two of three doubles matches against Hope Friday morning. Juniors Jay Horrey and Sean Clerget won 9-8 (2) at second singles, while Will Pelak and Ryan Waldon took the third flight with an identical score. Luke Bielawski improved to 13-0 for the season at number two singles with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 victory over John Gardner. Pelak lost to John Pelton 6-2, 6-2 in the featured match between the two regional-ranked players. Waldon and Horrey scored singles victories to keep Wabash on the championship side of the bracket. Horrey took a 6-1, 6-3 victory at third singles. Waldon won 6-3, 6-3 in the sixth flight.
Wabash scored all of its points against Carnegie Mellon --- the 17th-ranked team in the nation --- in doubles action. Ryan Tennyson and Bielawski combined for an 8-6 win at first doubles. Pelak and Waldon improved to 2-0 for the tournament with an 8-5 win in the third flight. The Little Giants would fall in four singles matches to drop into the consolation bracket of the tournament.
The Little Giants will play Kalamazoo College at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
