Wabash, seeded third coming into the 2008 North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament, picked up a win in its opening match with a 5-3 victory over sixth-seeded Wooster. The two-day event is being held at Oberlin College.
The Little Giants took two of the three doubles matches to being with a 2-1 lead. Jay Horrey and Sean Clerget picked up their sixth win of the season with an 8-2 win over Dave Albrechta and Ethan Arenstein. The win was also the 52nd doubles victory of Horrey's career. moving him two wins away from tying Adam Van Zee '07 for second on the Wabash all-time doubles victories list. Ryan Waldon and Will Pelak added an 8-4 win against Rob Ashmead and Andrew Garnett at third doubles.
Pelak won in straight sets at number one singles by scores of 6-1, 6-1. Ryan Tennyson controlled his fourth singles match from the outset, cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Waldon had to go into a third set before securing the team victory for Wabash with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win.
"We are a better team than we were when we beat Wooster 5-4 earlier in the season," head coach Jason Hutchison said. "But Wooster is also a better team. We knew we would have to play well to advance."
The Little Giants have advanced --- heading into Sunday's semifinal match against second-seeded Denison at 10:30 a.m. at Oberlin. The Big Red earned a spot in the semis with a 5-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan.
