Senior Geoff Lambert's outstanding Wabash track and field career came to an end Friday night after finishing seventh in the second heat of the 800-meter dash at the 2008 NCAA Division III National Championship meet held at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Lambert's time of 1:53.59 placed him 11th overall of out the 17 competitors. The top-nine times advanced to Saturday's finals, with Nick Stenuf from St. Nazereth College earning the final spot with a time of 1:52.88. Lambert's heat proved to be the fastest of the two groups, with six of the nine runners moving on to the finals. He was less than a second behind the final qualifer in his heat --- senior Jack Hommer from Wartburg College with a time of 1:52.62.
This was the sixth trip to the nationals for Lambert, who was searching for his third overall All-America title. He took fifth place at the 2006 outdoor championships to earn the honor for the first time. Lambert finished second in the nation at the 2007 indoor nationals, trailing only Jimmy O'Brien from Ohio Northern. O'Brien, running in the same heat at this year's outdoor event, posted the fastest time of either heat with a mark of 1:52.06.
