Aurora University jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back, handing the Wabash soccer team its first loss of the season in a 4-1 contest. The match started 30 minutes late before Aurora found the back of the net twice in the opening period.
The Spartans (2-1) added to their two first-half goals with a penalty kick in the second period, followed by a final score a minute after the penalty goal to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Wabash rallied for a goal by Drew Kapsalis late in the final five minutes of the match.
"It was as if we stayed in Crawfordsville in the first half," head coach Roberto Giannini said. "We played better for the first 15 minutes of the second half, but the penalty kick really seemed to take the wind out of our sails.
"We're not as a bad as a 4-1 score indicates, but now we know we're not as good yet as our two shutout wins in the first two games might seem. Aurora was a fast and physical team. We have to get ready to play on Sunday and keep working to get better."
Wabash (2-1) continues its weekend in the Chicago-land area with a Sunday noon match at the University of Chicago.
