Wabash, DePauw Battle To 0-0 Tie

Nineteen shots on goal were turned away by Pat West from Wabash and Ted Jacobi from DePauw as the two schools played to a 0-0 tie in two overtimes Tuesday night in Greencastle.

The tie was the first in the history of the soccer rivalry dating back to the first match in 1966. Wabash and DePauw went to overtime on three previous occasions, with the Little Giants holding a 2-1 advantage in extra sessions prior to Tuesday's tie.

West made a series of spectacular stops in a two-minute stretch, turning aside three shots at point-blank range to keep the match scoreless.

Wabash had its opportunities, as well, but could not get a shot past Jacobi in 110 minutes of action. The Little Giants fired their own succession of shots in front of the net, and had an attempt by Deigo Aliaga that sailed just wide of the left post as it hooked back toward the mouth of the goal near the end of regulation.

"It was a tremendous effort by both teams," head coach Roberto Giannini said after the match. "Because of the way both teams played, perhaps a tie is the best outcome for both."

West, starting his seventh game in net for the Little Giants, made 10 total saves in the match. (Listen to Coach Roberto Giannini's comments on the play of Pat West and the rest of the team versus DePauw in this Quicktime video file.)
