Burgess' Career Best Leads Wabash to Hoops Win

A career-best 15-point effort by senior center Jesse Burgess (Camby, IN/Mooresville) led the Wabash College basketball team to a 64-45 victory over Oberlin College on Saturday afternoon.

Burgess connected on 6-of-6 shots from the field and added 3-of-5 free throws as the Little Giants won their sixth consecutive home game and 11th game this season.

Burgess' hot shooting from the field certainly wasn't contagious for either team. The Wabash defense held Oberlin to 18-of-71 shooting from the field for a mere 25.4-percent. The Yeomen connected on 3-of-13 three-pointers against the top three-point field goal defensive team in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Wabash managed to shoot 45.3-percent on 24-of-53 shooting from the field. But the Little Giants struggled from behind the arc, hitting only 3-of-22 from the three-point line. And one of those shots wasn't your normal three.

With Wabash leading 30-17 and time running out in the first half, senior forward Ryan Short (Indianapolis, IN/Perry Meridian) grabbed a loose-ball rebound and dribbled toward mid-court with time about to expire. Short launched a shot from nearly three-quarter court, slamming it off of the backboard and into the basket to send Wabash to a 33-17 halftime lead. The Little Giants traded baskets with Oberlin throughout much of the second half to maintain their lead, earning the 19-point victory.

Wabash's only other three-point baskets came from Joe DesJean (Indianapolis, IN/Perry Meridian), who finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, and Brady Claxton (Shelbyville, IN/Shelbville). Claxton finished with 10 points, putting him 14 away from reaching the 1,000-point mark in his career.

Wabash moves to 11-3 with the victory, 5-1 in the NCAC. Oberlin falls to 0-14, 0-6 in the NCAC. The Little Giants travel to Springfield, Ohio on Wednesday night to play conference co-leader Wittenberg University. Tipoff is slated to start around 8 p.m.
