Six area alums spanning three decades came together with a few family members and friends on Saturday as part of the national Wabash Day to put in a few hours packing boxes for Harvesters, Kansas City’s only food bank. Harvesters depends on donated labor from community and civic groups throughout the year in order to meet the demand for food supplies going to the city’s most needy families.
Wabash alums were assigned to what was essentially an assembly line for boxes containing a variety of food items designated for shipment to senior citizens in need. In just a little over two hours, the group of ten, joined by a few other volunteers, managed to fill up 15 pallets with over 500 boxes containing the required milk, juice, meat, and grain products and meeting the entire morning’s quota.
Joining Saturday’s efforts were E.J. Becker ’94, Ross Dillard ’07, David Dingley ’81, Tony Quandt ’04, Derek Richey ’01, Mike Cummings ’86, and some of Mike’s family and friends. Mike is the leader of the Kansas City area alumni association and Ross was the lead organizer of the Wabash Day activity.
