The Wabash soccer team traveled to Springfield, Ohio Wednesday night for match against seventh-ranked Wittenberg University. The Tigers got three assists from Matt Borland as part of a 4-0 victory over the visitors.
The Little Giants fired an early shot but were unable to take the early lead. The Tigers (13-0, 4-0 NCAC) put the first goal on the scoreboard on a shot by Jimmy Thinnes when Borland found him with a pass in the 30th minute of the match. Borland picked up his second assist when Andy Sharek scored off his throw-in with less than 30 seconds remaining in the first half.
"We had a chance to score in the first two minutes of the match on a one-versus-one play," head coach Roberto Giannini said. "Unfortunately we were unable to get the shot past the goalkeeper. We stayed very organized and had a couple of other chances, but we made some mistakes and they capitalized with a couple of goals in the first half."
After a lengthy delay due to a shoulder injury suffered by one of the Wittenberg players in the first minutes of the second half, the Tigers took advantage of another Wabash mistake when Ryan Ruef knocked in a header off another pass from Borland. Brian Dickman added a final goal in the 83rd minute.
Freshman Austin Jennings tallied the only shot on goal for Wabash for the match. Rookie goalkeeper Pat West made seven saves.
Wabash (4-7-3, 0-5 NCAC) returns to Mud Hollow Field Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. match against Hiram College.
