Swimmers Dominate in Double-Dual Win

Wabash cruised to its first two dual meet wins of the 2008 season Saturday, defeating Rose-Hulman 113-26 and Illinois Wesleyan University 103-24. 

The Little Giants won 13 of 16 events, taking the top-three spots in the 100 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 100 freestyle, and 100 butterfly.

The Wabash foursome of Eric Vaughn, Evan Rhinesmith, Adam Current and Robert Fozkos won the opening 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:41.00. Steve Zajac, Paul Buescher, David Birrer, and Blaine Cooper-Surma took second place in the event (1:45.59). Vaughn (right) added individual victories in the 200 backstroke (2:00.22) and the 200 individual medley (2:02.61).

Craig Vetor and Jordon Blackwell were 1-2 in the 200 free. Vetor won the event with a time of 1:46.46, while Blackwell touched the wall in 1:49.62. Vaughn added an individual first place finish, winning the 100 backstroke (55.89). Nick Rockefeller was third (56.53) in addition to finishing third in the 200 backstroke (2:05.72).

Wabash controlled the 100 breaststroke. Rhinesmith was first with a time of 1:02.25. Buescher took second (1:05.74), while Jordan Extine was third (1:05.92).

Four Little Giants were the first to finish in the 200 butterfly. Freshman Logan Falley won his first individual event, winning the race in 2:03.25. Birrer was second (2:05.12), followed by Fozkos (2:06.15) and Current (2:10.40). Matt Routh took the top spot in the 50 free with a time of 22.91. Cooper-Surma was third in the 50 free (22.96).

Vetor (left), Blackwell, and Cooper-Surma grabbed the top spots in the 100 free. Vetor posted the winning time of 48.14. Blackwell finished in 48.35, while Cooper-Surma touched in 50:55.

Rhinesmith won the 200 breaststroke (2:21.96). Buescher grabbed third place (2:27.35). Falley and Brian Graham were the first two to finish the 500 free. Falley's time of 5:02.50 gave him first place ahead of Graham in second (5:07.68).

Current (54.63), Birrer (56.22), and Fozkos (57.68) swept the 100 butterfly.

Tom Schiltz added points to the Wabash total, finishing second on the one-meter diving board with a total of 184.35 points.

The Little Giants closed out the meet with a win by Blackwell, Cooper-Surma, Rockefeller, and Vetor in the 400 free relay.

Wabash will compete in another double-dual meet Friday night at Wittenberg University. The Tigers and Little Giants will also swim against Transylvania University at 7 p.m.
