Surprising Beauty So Close to Home

Alex Moseman ’11 served as staff photographer for this year’s Present Indiana, the Wabash summer program funded by the Quality of Life in Indiana grant, in which students work with faculty and staff on projects that demonstrate the rich heritage and culture of Indiana.

The sophomore political science major also created a photo essay of the state, hoping "to capture its natural and cultural beauty."

One of the highlights of his summer was his day with 2001 Indiana News Photographer of the year Matt Detrich. As Moseman recalls, "There I was on the street corner taking pictures of storm clouds alongside one of the best photographers in the country.

"Taking a photograph changes the way you see a place," Moseman says, pointing to a picture he took of a barn only a few miles from his home in Bloomington. "I must have driven by that barn 50 or 60 times in my life, and I never really noticed it before—what’s really there, the way the ivy and grass seem to be taking it back."

The Quality of Life in Indiana grant is funded by Lilly Endowment Inc.
