Wabash College baseball assistant coach Mike Schultz ’08 has been hired by the Waterloo Bucks of the Northwoods Baseball League to serve as pitching coach this summer.
Schultz is in his first season as a full-time assistant for the Little Giants. He served as pitching coach for the Little Giants during his senior year after an arm injury ended his playing career. Under his guidance the Wabash squad finished third in the North Coast Athletic Conference in pitching last season with a 4.59 ERA and 20 victories. Opposing teams batted .261 against his staff.
"I am extremely excited for the opportunity to coach for the Bucks in the prestigious Northwoods League this summer," Schultz said. "Enduring a sixty-plus game schedule and never-ending bus rides will be intense; however, I am confident that my experiences at Wabash prepared me well for any challenges."
"Mike is a young coach that has what it takes to be successful in college coaching," Bucks field manager Pete Lauritson said in a press release announcing Schultz's hiring. "He is in coaching for the right reasons and I look forward to working with him and watching him guide our pitching staff this summer."
Schultz earned two varsity letters as a member of the Wabash team. He played in eight games, including three relief appearances as a freshman, allowing just one earned run for the year.
Schultz will begin his duties with Waterloo at the conclusion of the 2009 Wabash baseball season.
