DeYoung earned All-Conference honors after becoming the only athlete to clear 6-9. He had already earned a provisional spot with a jump of 6-8 in the first meet of the season at the Knowling Fieldhouse in February. Saturday’s performance guarantees the senior a spot in next week’s national championship meet.
Wabash finished fifth overall at Saturday’s NCAC Indoor Championships at Denison University. The Little Giants finished with 57 points. Allegheny won the team competition with 144 points. Wittenberg was second (133 points), while Denison (76 points) took third. Wooster (70 points) was fourth.
DeYoung added another All-Conference in the triple jump, finishing third with a leap of 43 feet, 10-3/4 inches.
Junior Dan Ruge (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton) finished second in the 800-meter finals to pickup his first of two All-NCAC honors. He finished with a time of 1:59.33, finishing just over a second behind the race’s winning time. Ruge also took third in the 1,500-meter run. He toured the circuit in 4:05.34 to earn a place on the All-Conference squad. Senior Mark Sherer (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso) just missed a spot on the team, finishing fourth in the same race with a time of 4:05.41. Sherer also finished fourth in the 800-meter (2:00.14).
Sophomore Sean Gerold (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) nearly captured a All-Conference spot in the shot put. Gerold finished fourth in the individual results with a throw of 43-feet, 1-3/4 inches.
