Wabash Drops Two in Opening Day in Florida

The Wabash College baseball saw its annual trip to Florida start out on a sour note on Saturday. The Little Giants dropped a 6-1 decision to the College of Wooster. Wabash lost 9-4 in Saturday’s nightcap against Eastern Nazarene College.

Wabash played the Scots, ranked fifth in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s preseason Division III poll, in its first contest at Fort Myers, Florida. The Little Giants held Wooster to four runs over the first six innings behind a combined seven-hit effort by pitchers Jon Horne (Cincinnati, IN/St. Xavier) and John Thiry (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Christian). Wabash rallied for a run in the top of sixth when senior Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) on an RBI double to right-center field by Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside). That would prove to be the Little Giants’ only run. Wooster responded with a two-run homer in the seventh to hand Wabash its first loss in Florida. Martin, Mack, Danny Schubert (Lebanon, IL/Lebanon), Bill Goff (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg), and Jared Bogan (Struthers, OH/Struthers) each split the five Wabash hits in the game.

The Little Giants were forced to play from behind in the second game of the evening in its loss at the hands of Eastern Nazarene. ENC scored the first three runs of the game in the second inning before Wabash answered with two in its half of the second. The Little Giants would get no closer than one run, trading runs with Eastern until the top of the seventh when an ENC four-spot made it a 9-4 final. Tyler Nance (Celebration, FL/Celebration) enjoyed a return to his home state by leading the Little Giants with two hits in the game. Goff suffered the loss after working five innings and scattering six hits.

Wabash falls to 2-2 with the pair of losses. The Little Giants continue their play in “The Sunshine State” on Sunday with a doubleheader against Illinois College.
