Little Giants Dominate in Florida Victory over Muskingum

Sophomore Bill Goff (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) led the hit parade for the Wabash College baseball team while freshman John Thiry (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Christian) baffled Muskingum College hitters on Monday afternoon as the Little Giants picked up a 14-4 victory in Fort Myers, Florida.

Thiry came on in relief, pitching five nearly flawless innings to earn his first college victory. He allowed only one hit and had a hit batsman, but otherwise kept the Muskingum hitters off balance all game long. Thiry took advantage of a solid effort by the Wabash infield, forcing 11 ground ball outs in the contest. Infielders Danny Schubert (Lebanon, IL/Lebanon), Nick George (West Lafayette, IN/Harrison), Nick Rico (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista), and Goff made play after play to keep the bases empty for Thiry.

Goff added plenty of damage at the plate for the Little Giants. The sophomore first baseman went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. His first hit came with Wabash trailing 2-0 in the second inning. Goff blasted a pitch over the 375 sign in left-centerfield to cut the lead to one run. After connecting for his first home run of the season, Goff added his first double of the year in the fifth inning to help the Little Giants break the game open.

After trailing 2-0, Wabash scored two more runs in the third in addition to Goff's homer to take a one-run lead. Muskingum answered with two runs in the bottom of the innning to take a 4-3 lead. It would be the last time that Muskingum would be close to the Little Giants. Wabash added a four spot in the fourth inning, followed by a six-run fifth inning to put the game away. Thiry didn't allow a baserunner in the fourth or fifth innings before giving up a two-out double in the sixth, ending the inning with the next batter. A perfect seventh inning gave Wabash its fifth win of the year, its third in a row on its Florida trip.

In addition to Goff's performance at the plate, the Little Giants got big hits from nearly every player. Schubert had two hits and three RBIs in the win. Jared Martin (Rosedale, IN/Riverton Parke) added two hits and two RBIs, as did Dan Matusik (Highland, IN/Highland). Senior Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) had two hits for Wabash, as well.

The Little Giants move to 5-3 with the victory. Wabash will take Tuesday off before returning to the diamond on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Monmounth College.
