Fours and Nines: Big Bash Around the Corner

It’s time to register for the 2009 Big Bash Reunion Weekend, which honors classes ending in fours and nines, but is open to the entire Wabash family. Big Bash begins Friday, June 5 and concludes Sunday, June 7.

Now in its sixth year, the Big Bash reunion concept has brought back to campus thousands of alumni and their families in a weekend that celebrates fond memories and lifelong friendships.

Among the highlights are Friday night’s Big Bash Banquet (that's Gordon Colson ’58 on the right), at which members of the Class of 1959 will be honored with their 50th reunion medallions; Saturday’s Alumni Chapel Sing competition; colloquies led by members of reunion classes; and the weekend-long Scarlet Yarns video history project.

This year’s colloquium presenters include a photographer and world traveler (Denis Kelly ’84); an executive-turned-winemaker (Doug Sparks ’69); an award-winning psychiatrist (Chris Bojrab ’89); an alum who led the effort to recycle the RCA Dome’s roof (Michael Bricker ’04); and an archaeologist who discovered the Ancient Greek games site at Nemea (Stephen Miller ’64), just to name a few.

Competition for the Regan-Robinson Award, presented to the class that wins the Alumni Chapel Sing, has grown increasingly fierce. Some classes have donned specially made shirts and pots; others have used professional song-leaders; and a few have even tried to bribe the judges!

Last year, several folks got together to conceive Scarlet Yarns, a video history project patterned after National Public Radio’s Story Corp. Over the course of three days at the 2008 Big Bash, more than 40 alumni had the opportunity to record their precious memories from their days as students at Wabash.

A video recording studio will be set up in Lilly Library, and alumni (and spouses) are encouraged to swing by to tell a story or share a special memory of a professor, coach, or classmate.

The College makes it easy for you — all you have to do is show up ready to talk. And a special, commemorative DVD with dozens of Scarlet Yarns excerpts will be available later in the summer.

Take a moment to check out the new Big Bash Reunion Weekend website, look at the photos and Scarlet Yarns video, and make plans now to be a part of the 2009 Big Bash at Wabash!
