Goff, George Lead Little Giants to Sunday Diamond Split

Wabash College senior Bill Goff (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) scattered five hits on the way to his first complete-game victory of the season as the Little Giant baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader with Olivet College at Mud Hollow Field. Wabash took an 8-2 win in the opening contest before falling 8-7 in the final game of the series.

Goff threw seven innings, striking out five while allowing only one earned run in the Little Giants’ 8-2 win in the Sunday opener, earning his second win of the season.

Wabash picked up a run in the second inning when Danny Schubert (Lebanon, IL/Lebanon) opened the inning with double. He came home four batters later when Jared Martin (Rosedale, IN/Riverton Parke) lifted a sacrifice fly to left to give Wabash a 1-0 lead. An RBI double by freshman Jared Bogan (Struthers, OH/Struthers) ripped an RBI double in the third, followed by an RBI single by fellow newcomer Nick Rico (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) to put the Little Giants up by three runs.

Wabash exploded for five runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Nick George (West Lafayette, IN/Harrison) and Bogan each added RBI hits, followed by a two-run double by junior Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside). Rico brought the final run of the inning home with his second RBI single of the game.

George went 2-for-4 to pace the Little Giant hitters. Bogan, Mack, and Rico each had two RBIs. Schubert also went 2-for-4 at the plate for Wabash, while Rico was 2-for-3.

The Little Giants took a 7-3 lead in the second game, looking for the weekend sweep after capturing a 13-0 win in Saturday’s contest. But a five-run fifth inning erased the Little Giants’ advantage. Wabash put runners on first and second with only one out in the bottom of the seventh inning in an attempt to tie the game, but a pickoff and fly out ended the game. George was 2-for-4 in the second game, while leadoff hitter Tyler Nance (Celebration, FL/Celebration) tacked on two RBIs.

The two weekend wins gives Wabash an overall record of 10-7. The Little Giants open North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday, March 29 as Wabash travels to Wittenberg University for two weekend doubleheaders in Springfield, Ohio.
