Thinclads Dominate Wabash Relays

The Wabash College thinclads captured three individual first-place finishes and three relay championships at Saturday's 49th Annual Wabash College Relays. The Little Giant squad was named the Outstanding Team of meet by a vote of the coaches.

The top performance for the Little Giants came in the men's 5000-meter run. Wabash swept the top three places. Junior Dan Ruge (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton) captured the individual honors, crossing the finish line first with a time of 16:14.40. Teammate Zack Eichel (Columbus, IN/Columbus North) came across the line second, finishing in 16:31.47. Freshman Ethan Paul (Evansville, IN/Reitz Memorial) completed the sweep, running a time of 16:35.20 for third place.

The Wabash 4 X 400 team of Steve Cottom (Rosedale, IN/Riverton Parke), Jason Lloyd (Bolingbrook, IL/Hales Franciscan), Wes Jacks (West Lafayette, IN/Harrison), and All-American high jumper Peter DeYoung (Evansville, IN/Bosse) captured the blue ribbon with a first-place time of 3:30.20. The 4 X 800 and distance medley relay teams added second place finishes to the Wabash totals. Peter Fenimore (Bexley, OH/Bexley), Demetrian Cook (Woodbridge, VA/C.D. Hylton), Patrick Banks (Jennings, MO/Jennings), and Mark Sherer (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso) combined to tour the track in 11:13.54 in the distance medley. Banks, Cottom, Sherer, and Ruge were second in the 4 X 800 with a time of 8:13.09.

The field events are scored as relays at this annual event. The two best scores from a team are combined to determine the winning effort in each event. Wabash captured two first-place relay titles on Saturday, with two Little Giant throwers earning top individual marks.

Senior Caleb Ishman (Gary, IN/Emerson Visual & Performing Arts) had the best individual toss in the hammer throw, finishing with a distance of 47.15 meters. He combined with Sean Gerold (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville), who had a best throw of 40.53 meters, to take first place in the relay event with a combined distance of 87.68 meters. Gerold and Andy Cartwright (Indianapolis, IN/Decatur Central) combined for second place in the shot put relay, throwing a distance of 24.85 meters. Gerold had the second-best individual throw with a distance of 12.69 meters. Gerold and freshman Dave Pitcher (Ft. Wayne, IN/Carroll) also took second in the discus throw (77.06).

Seniors Adam Futscher (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) and Jeff Gravenstreter (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) took first place in the javelin throw with a distance of 88.75 meters. Futscher threw the longest individual distance with a throw of 47.09 meters.
