Little Giants Finish Third at 2009 Kerry Seward Tourney

The Wabash duo of Evan Bayless and Zach Lowry took second place in their doubles flight to help the Little Giants to a third place finish at the 2009 Kerry Seward Invitational.

Bayless and Lowry won their first two matches to set up a showdown with Coe College number three doubles players Greg Janssen and Joey Lankelma. Bayless and Lowry opened with an 8-6 victory against Andy Schwenke and Nick Boomgarden from Carthage, followed by a 9-7 win against Dalton Main and Joe Glass from Transylvania. Janssen and Lankelma took the title match, however, with an 8-2 victory.

Sean Clerget and Jay Horrey took third place at number one doubles. The pair defeated Albion's Ben Miller and Brent Parshall in the opening round 9-7 before losing 8-2 to eventual champions Elliott Rausa and Sam Zerbib from Coe. Horrey and Clerget rallied for an 8-4 win in the finals against Nick Kowalczyk and Ryan Paul from Ohio Northern.

Horrey added a third place finish at number one singles, winning his first round match 6-1, 6-3 over Rose-Hulman's Scott Grubbs. Horrey lost in three sets (3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (1)) in the next round to Ryan King from Coe before defeating Will Palmer from Transylvania 6-0, 6-4.

Clerget was third at number six singles. He beat Boomgarden 7-5, 6-1 in the first round before losing 6-0, 6-2 to Rausa in the semifinals. Clerget defeated Johnny Vinson from Albion 6-2, 3-6, 10-3 in the finals.

Freshman Peter Gunderman posted a 2-1 record for the weekend to finish third at number four singles. He started with a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Kyle Bohnert from Hanover before falling 6-3, 6-0 to Janssen, the flight's champion. Gunderman came back to beat Danny Frank from Albion 7-6 (5), 3-6, 10-3 in the last round.

Wabash just missed finishing third by one point, trailing champion Coe College (67 points), Carthage (54), and Transylvania (45) with a total of 44 points. Ohio Northern (42), Albion (38), Rose-Hulman (21), and Hanover (14) completed the team scoring.

The Little Giants return to dual meet action this weekend, playing host to Wittenberg and Calvin at the Collett Tennis Center Saturday.
