The Wabash golf team dominated the scoring in the spring portion of the Giant-Engineer Match Play Golf Classic against Rose-Hulman Wednesday afternoon. The Little Giants defeated Rose 13-1/2 to 2-1/2 at Hulman Links in Terre Haute, Indiana.
The Ryder Cup-styled tournament includes a team point for overall stroke play with the top-six player's scored counting. Wabash defeated Rose 482-501 thanks to a two-over par 74 from senior Jordan Vice to earn medalist honors. Sam Russell finished second in the individual scoring with a 76, while Luke Moton took fourth place with a 79. Drew Palmer's 83 tied for sixth place, while Ben Foster and Charlie Kelly each shot 85's to complete the team scoring.
In the match play portion of the event, Vice won his match 5-and-3. Foster scored a 4-and-3 win for a second team point, then combined with Vice for a 4-and-3 victory. Russell won his head-to-head match 5-and-4, while Palmer was a 2-and-1 winner. Russell and Palmer joined together to score 2-and-1 in best ball play.
Kyle Nagdemen picked up a 2-and-1 win in the sixth flight, while Moton scored a 5-and-4 win in the seventh. The duo were easy winners as a best ball team, taking a 7-and-5 victory. Kelly and Terry Sullivan were 3-and-2 best ball winners. Each scored individual wins, as well. Kelly took a 3-and-2 victory in the ninth flight, while Sullivan scored a 4-and-3 win in the tenth.
Koch and Jake German tied their best ball match against Rose-Hulman, earning each team a half point.
The Little Giants defended the trophy after defeating Rose 14-2 in fall at the Crawfordsville Country Club. The Wabash team will compete at the Nye Collegiate Invitational Saturday and Sunday. The College of Wooster serves as host for the event.
