Little Giants To Play in NCAC Third Place Match

Wabash finished 1-1 on the opening day of the 2009 North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament. The Little Giants defeated Wooster 5-4 in the opening before losing 5-0 to nationally-ranked Denison in the afternoon.

The Little Giants entered the tournament as the number-three seed out of the Western Division of the conference, facing the third-seeded Fighting Scots from the Eastern Division. The Little Giants took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches. Seniors Jay Horrey and Sean Clerget earned an 8-3 win in the first flight, while Ricky Ritter and Peter Gunderman were 8-2 winners at number two doubles.

Horrey scored a straight sets 6-4, 6-4 win at number one singles. Gunderman added a 6-0, 6-4 victory at number four singles. The match decision came down to number six singles, where Clerget rallied in three sets to take a 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory.

Wabash faced Denison in the second round, the same team the Little Giants had to play Thursday night prior to the tournament to wrap up the regular season. The results were the same both times --- a 5-0 win for the 23rd-ranked Big Red.

The Little Giants will face Wittenberg in the finals for third place. The second-seeded Tigers defeated Allegheny 5-4 in round one before losing 5-0 to Kenyon in the semifinals. Wittenberg defeated Wabash 5-4 earlier in the year.
