Wabash senior outfielder Jake Thomas has been named the North Coast Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week.
Thomas hit .679 for the week, collecting 19 hits in 28 at-bats over eight games. In the process he broke his own Wabash record for hits in a season, knocking out his 60th of the year in Sunday’s second game against Earlham to break his old mark of 59 set in 2007. During the week he hit five doubles and posted 13 RBI with .857 slugging and .688 on-base percentages. He drew one walk and did not have any strikeouts. He was also perfect in the field with 10 putouts. Thomas went 5-for-6 against Wittenberg and 5-for-8 versus Earlham.
Thomas holds the Wabash career hits record with 192. He is fifth in doubles with 34 in four seasons, fourth in home runs (13) and seventh in RBI (101).
Wabash went 6-2 for the week with the help of Thomas' efforts, including two wins over Earlham and a two-game split at Wittenberg to earn a tie for first place in the Western Division standings of the NCAC. The Little Giants earned a berth in this weekend's NCAC Baseball Tournament for the first time since joining the league nine years ago. The Little Giants will open the tournament at the College of Wooster. The Fighting Scots won the Eastern Division and will serve as hosts for the best-of-three series. The winner will meet the winner of the Ohio Wesleyan vs. Kenyon series for the conference championship.
