Simple Rules Can Help Prevent Flu Problems

With all of the news coverage and talk about the swine flu problems around the world, it's a good time to remember a few simple rules.

Or as many a doctor and expert has said lately: Remember the things your mother taught you!

Wabash nurse Carol Lamb reminds Wabash students there are some very simple steps to staying healthy year around. The simple steps are powerful protection against any type of flu virus.

1. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds, sing the Happy Birthday song through twice (20 sec. are longer than you think), especially after you sneeze or cough. Alcohol-based cleaners are also effective.

2. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue, throw the tissue in the trash after you use it, or cough or sneeze into the sleeve of your elbow.

3.Avoid touching your eyes, mouth or nose. Germs spread this way.

4. Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

5. If you are ill with influenza, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

6.It has also been recommended that people do not shake hands when
they greet people.
