Thinclads Finish Third at 2009 NCAC Championship

Eighteen All-Conference performances helped Wabash to a third place finish at the 2009 North Coast Athletic Conference Men’s Track and Field Championship meet.

Two Wabash athletes took first place in their respective events. Alex Moseman won the hammer throw with a mark of 47.54 meters (156 feet). Wes Chamblee earned the top spot in the high jump, winning the event by clearing 1.95 meters (6 feet, 4-3/4 inches). (View photos from the meet taken by Moseman here.)

Chamblee scored a total of four All-NCAC awards. He took second place in the 400 hurdles with a time of 54.85 and was part of two third-place relays. He joined Mike Russell, Jake Zielinski, and Emmanuel Aouad to take third in the 400-meter relay, finishing in 43.58. The 1600-meter relay of Chamblee, Zielinski, Spencer Sheridan, and Russell also finished third with a time of 3:21.14. Sheridan was a last-minute change to the team, helping the Little Giants to the third-place All-NCAC finish.

Aouad also picked up two individual All-NCAC finishes, taking third place in the 110-meter hurdles (14.98) and the 400-meter hurdles (54.98).

Seth Einterz broke the NCAC meet record in the 5000-meter run while finishing second in the event. He crossed the finish line in 15:09. 47, over one second faster than the previous record of 15:10.98. Allegheny’s Chris Marker won the event with a time of 14:59.90 to set the new NCAC record.

Kevin McCarthy took second place in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.88. Brent Banach took third in the javelin with a throw of 53.43 meters (175 feet, 3 inches). Russell’s second place finish Friday night in the long jump completed the top-three finishes for the Little Giants.

Seven other Wabash athletes contributed to the final team scoring. Hugh Jackson finished fourth in the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:59.34, scoring five points for the Little Giants. Donavan White grabbed sixth place (4:02.77) to add three points. Bill Digman took fourth in the steeplechase (9:44.46), while teammate Sam Compton-Craig was seventh (10:00.19). Wade Heiny earned a fifth place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (15.51). Matt Schellar added a sixth place finish in the hammer throw (37.98 meters; 124 feet, 7 inches). Russell completed the team scoring by tying for fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.86 meters (6 feet, 1-1/4 inches).

Wabash scored a total of 122.5 points for its third place team finish. Ohio Wesleyan won the meet with a score of 226 points, followed by Allegheny in second with 129.5. Oberlin (113.5) took fourth place, while Wooster (58) and Denison (58) tied for fifth place. Wittenberg (51.5), Earlham (46), and Kenyon (13) completed the team scoring.
