Wabash Baseball Drops Two to Denison

The Wabash College baseball team lost both games of Saturday's doubleheader against the co-North Coast Athletic Conference leading Denison University Big Red. The Little Giants fell 5-1 in the first game before losing 16-2 in the second.

Trailing 1-0 entering the second inning, the Little Giant tied the game on an RBI double by freshman Chris Sides (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg). Freshman Jared Bogan (Struthers, OH/Struthers) opened the inning by reaching on an error and was sacrificed to second by Danny Schubert (Lebanon, IL/Lebanon) before scoring the first Wabash run on Sides two-base hit.

But the Big Red broke the game open in the third, scoring four runs that ended up being the last runs scored in the contest. Wabash would threaten in the seventh when Sides reached on a base hit to open the inning, then moved to second on a one-out base hit by sophomore Tyler Nance (Celebration, FL/Celebration). Both runners would move up a base on a wild pitch, but were stranded there as the next two Little Giants struck out to end the game.

Game two started on a high note for Wabash, but ended in disaster. Nance opened the contest with a lead-off homer, his first long shot of the season, to give the Little Giants a 1-0 lead. The Big Red responded with four runs in the bottom of the second, then added six in the second to blow the game open. Wabash scored a run in its portion of the second when Schubert led off the inning with a walk and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Jared Martin (Rosedale, IN/Riverton Parke).

But Denison kept adding the runs, scoring two in the fifth and three in the sixth on the way to a 16-2 victory.

Senior Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) had two hits in the first game and one in the second for the Little Giants. Sides went 2-for-5 in the two games for Wabash. The Little Giants had six hits in game one and only four base hits in game two.

Wabash falls to 15-13 with the two losses and drops two game behind the Big Red, who move into sole possession of first place in the NCAC Western Division. The Little Giants can move back into a tie for the division lead with Denison by taking the remaining two games of the four-game series on Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. EST.
