Wabash Splits Sunday Doubleheader at Denison

The Wabash College baseball split Sunday's North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Denison University, winning the first game 6-2 before falling 19-4 in the final game of the four-game series.

Denison took a 1-0 lead in Sunday's opener, picking up a run in the first inning after a leadoff triple. The Little Giants answered with three runs in the third inning. Junior Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside) opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After moving to third on a fielder's choice, he came home on an RBI single by sophomore Jared Martin (Rosedale, IN/Riverton Parke). A sacrifice bunt sent Martin to second, allowing him to score one batter later on a base hit by sophomore Nick George (West Lafayette, IN/Harrison). George added the third run of the inning on an error by the Big Red's second baseman to give the Little Giants a 3-1 lead.

Wabash tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Sophomore Tyler Nance (Celebration, FL/Celebration) singled to start the inning. The Little Giants loaded the bases on hits by George and Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville). George and pinch-runner Todd Dodson (Franklin, IN/Franklin Community) scored two runs on a base hit by Bill Goff (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg). After a double-play ball moved Martin up to third, he scored on a balk to give the Little Giants a 6-1 lead.

The Big Red scored a run in the sixth, but Jake Martin scattered three hits through seven innings to pick up his fourth win of the season on the mound without a loss. He allowed only one earned run and three walks while striking out four.

Denison jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the final game of the series. Wabash scored three in the third on a two-run double by Goff and an error by Denison's shortstop. The Little Giants' final run came in the fourth when Phil Ramos (Zillah, WA/Zillah) doubled and scored on a ground out by Jake Martin.

The Little Giants move to 16-14 for the season, 6-6 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Wabash trails the Big Red by three games for first place in the NCAC West race. Wabash has only one conference series remaining, playing four games against Earlham College April 26-27 at Mud Hollow Field. Denison still has games remaining against Wittenberg University to close out its conference season after moving to 20-9 and 8-4 in the NCAC West with this weekend's results. The top two teams in the division advance to the NCAC Tournament, along with the top two teams from the Eastern Division. The winner of the tournament receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Wabash will play a non-conference series on Tuesday, April 15 at Rose-Hulman. The Little Giants will play two seven-inning games beginning at 6 p.m.
