Little Giants Fall Below .500 with Doubleheader Losses to DePauw

The Wabash College baseball teams dropped below the .500 mark for the first time since the opening game of the season, losing a pair of games to DePauw University on Saturday afternoon by the final scores of 4-2.

The first 4-2 loss by the Little Giants saw the squad playing from behind the entire contest. The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after six innings before Wabash put its only two runs on the board in its half of the sixth. After a hit batsman and fielder's choice put on first base, sophomore shortstop Danny Schubert (Lebanon, IL/Lebanon) slammed a double to left center to move Bogan to third. Both runners moved up a base on a Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside) single to cut the DePauw lead to two runs. Schubert came home for the final run of the game for Wabash in a single by Chris Sides (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg).

The Little Giants took a 2-1 lead in the third inning of the second game, answering a DePauw run in the top of the third. Wabash manufactured its first run of the inning when Tyler Nance (Celebration, FL/Celebration) singled to third and advanced to second on a throwing error. A single by Nick George (West Lafayette, IN/Harrison) put runners on the corners with no outs. Nance then raced home when the Tigers tried to pick off George at first. George extended the rundown before being tagged out, giving Nance enough time to beat the throw to the plate to tie the game at 1-1.

Senior Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) put another runner on the base paths for Wabash with a one-out single. Goff hit into a fielder's choice to take Martin's place at first, then advanced to second on a base hit by Sides. Schubert gave the Little Giants a 2-1 lead with his second hit of the game, scoring Goff from second on a base hit to right center. But DePauw would tie the game with a run in the top of the fourth and take the lead for good with two in the top of the seventh to sweep the three-game Easter weekend series.

Nance and Martin each had four hits in the two Saturday games to lead the Little Giants. Schubert added three hits, including two doubles.

Wabash falls to 17-18 with the losses. The Little Giants will try to reach the .500 mark on Tuesday night against Franklin College in a nine-inning contest that will be played at Victory Field in Indianapolis, Indiana. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m. Admission at the gate is $4. No advance tickets will be sold.
