Eight Little Giants Earn All-Conference Honors at NCAC Track and Field Championships

Eight members of the Wabash College track and field team earned All-Conference awards at the 2003 North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, held Friday and Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan University. The Little Giants finished fourth in the ten-team competition.

An athlete earns a spot on the All-Confernece team by finishing in the top three places in any event except the hammer throw. The hammer throw is not recognized by the conference as an official event, but athletes compete in an exhibition event in an attempt to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships.

Sophomore Jason Lloyd (Bolingbrook, IL/Hales Franciscan) earned three All-NCAC certificates. Lloyd took second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.38, just a tick behind the winning time of 49.84. He also ran to a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in 23.06 seconds. The speedster then combined with Steve Cottom (Rosedale, IN/Riverton Parke), Wes Jacks (West Lafayette, IN/Harrison), and Joe Bombagetti (Crown Point, IN/Crown Point) to take second in the 4 X 400-meter relay, finishing in 3:23.91

Senior Peter DeYoung (Evansville, IN/Bosse) was the favorite coming into the meet to win the high jump. After winning the indoor conference championship in March, DeYoung made it a sweep by clearing 6-04 to take the conference title at the outdoor event. He also added another all-conference award to his trophy case, finishing second in the triple jump with a leap of 13.52 meters.

Senior Adam Futscher (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) joined DeYoung as an all-conference performer in the field events. Futscher had a toss of 53.5 meters in the javelin throw, earning a third-place finish. Freshman Dave Pitcher (Ft. Wayne, IN/Carroll) also claimed a spot on the All-NCAC team with a second-place finish in the discus throw. Pitcher set a personal best with a toss of 42.10 meters.

Senior Caleb Ishman (Gary, IN/Emerson Visual and Performing Arts), the conference record holder in the hammer throw exhibition, took second place in that event with a toss of 42.91 meters. Sophomore Sean Gerold (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) was third, throwing the hammer 39.21 meters.

Wabash senior Mark Sherer (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso) earned All-NCAC honors in the 1500-meter run, crossing the line in 4:03.99 to finish in second place.

Wabash scored 81 points in the meet as a team, finishing just four points behind the College of Wooster in third place.
