A penalty kick by Elmhurst's Randy Warren in the 56th minute gave the Bluejays the 1-0 victory over the Little Giants Sunday afternoon at Mud Hollow Field.
Warren's kick slid past freshman goalkeeper Matt Paul, who had maintained a shutout in his first career start to that point. Paul faced a total of seven shots from Elmhurst, including five on net to record four saves in his debut.
Wabash outshot the Bluejays 15-7, putting five shot attempts on net. Sophomore Austin Jennings led the attack with four total shots, but could not beat Elmhurst goaltender Sebastian Domczewski. (View photos taken by Wabash student photographer Drew Casey ’12 here.)
"Obviously we are not satisfied with the result," Wabash head coach Roberto Giannini said. "I did feel we played a good game. We were compacted and kept the field short and tight defensively. We had good chances with our five shots on goal.
"We have to continue to play hard just like we did Sunday. We have to keep creating chances and score on those chances. I'm proud of the way our team tried to execute what we've practiced, particularly in the second half. We were just unable to finish the opportunities that we had to score."
Dylan Andrew, Mark Babcock, and Christian Krenk each added two shot attempts in the contest.
The loss drops Wabash to 2-1 for the season, matching the 2-1 record for the Bluejays. While a Little Giant win would have given Wabash a 3-0 record for the first time since 1997, the 2-1 start equals the overall record through three games in 2008 and 2007.
The Little Giants return to the pitch Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. at home against Rose-Hulman.
