The Wabash College Theater Department will present its first theater production of the season, The Bacchae by Euripides. The play will run from October 7-10 in Ball Theater in the Fine Arts Center. The performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. each evening.
No play was more popular in the Greek Theater- or more frequently quoted and imitated — than The Bacchae. Written by Euripides near the end of his life, the play depicts the return of Dionysus to his birthplace in Thebes, angry about his mother’s murder and the failure of the Theban people to offer him sacrifices. This tragic play dramatizes the clash between order and disorder, chaos and restraint, barbarianism and civility. The fierce antagonism among these conflicting principles leads to a conclusion which, for depth of tragic irony, has no equal in dramatic literature.
The cast list includes Wabash students: Josue Gutierrez Guera ’11 as Dionysus; Liam Smith ’13 as the Chorus Leader; Garrett Wilson ’13 as Tiresias; Gus McKinney ’12 as Cadmus; Spencer Elliott ’10 as Pentheus; Aaron Hirsch ’12 as a soldier; Patrick McAllister ’10 as a soldier; and Donovan Bisbee ’12, Jon Hogge ’10, Clay Zook ’10, Chris Hogge ’13, Adam Phipps ’11 as the Chorus. Caroline Good will play the part of Agave.

Seating for Theater productions will be by general admission, though free tickets are required for Theater productions.
