The start of the 2003 soccer season wasn't quite what the Wabash squad had hoped for as the Little Giants lost a 4-0 decision to Kalamazoo College in the opening match of the 2003 Wabash Soccer Classic.
The Little Giants played even with the Hornets over the first 30 minutes until Kalamazoo's Brett Stinar broke the scoreless tie with the first goal of the match at 33:20. Just over five minutes later the Hornets added a second goal to take a 2-0 halftime lead.
Wabash nearly cut the lead in half five minutes into the second period when sophomore Jeff Diebel (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead) laced a shot at the net, only to see it turned away by Kalamazoo goalkeeper Nick Carlin-Voigt. The Little Giants fired two more shots at Carlin-Voigt in the contest, but could not slip the ball past the keeper. Junior Colin Smith (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville) and freshman Paul Ackermann (Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral) had the shots on goal for Wabash. Diebel led the team with three shots in the game, including the shot on goal in the second period.
Junior John Taggart (Carmel, IN/Hampton Roads Academy) made three saves in goal for Wabash.
The Little Giants will look to even their record on Sunday afternoon against Marian College of Wisconsin. The Sabres lost 10-0 to DePauw University in the second game on Saturday.
