First Half Goal Gives Wabash 1-0 Soccer Victory at Muhlenberg

Allentown, PA - A goal by junior midfielder Brendan Clougherty (Manchester, NH/Manchester Central) in the final second of the first half was enough to give the Wabash College soccer team a 1-0 victory over the host Muhlenberg College in the afternoon match of the 2003 Mule Soccer Invitational on Friday.

Clougherty's goal, the first of his Wabash career, came after a Tom Reifenberg (Ft. Wayne, IN/Bishop Dwenger) corner kick bounced around in front of the goal. Clougherty slammed the loose ball into the goal with just three second remaining on the first half clock.

"We played extremely well defensively today," said head coach George Perry. "We communicated well and did a great job of sorting out our defensive assignments."

Junior goalkeeper John Taggart (Carmel, IN/Hampton Roads Academy) faced an offensive onslaught by the Mules, but turned away every shot to earn his second shutout victory of the season.

Wabash evens it season record at 2-2 with the win. The Little Giants will play Delaware Valley College on Saturday afternoon in the final match of the invitational. The Aggies lost 3-1 to Stevens Institute of Technology in the first match on Friday.
