Balanced Scoring Lifts Wabash Past LaGrange

Four Little Giant basketball players scored in double figures to help Wabash outscore LaGrange College 42-31 in the second half on the way to an 81-63 win in the Maryville College Alumni Classic in Maryville, Tennessee Saturday afternoon.

Ben Burkett led the Little Giants with 16 points with perfect 7-for-7 shooting effort from the field. Aaron Brock had 13 points, while Chase Haltom added 11 points.

Junior Wes Smith scored 10 of his 14 points at the free throw line. He connected on 10-of-11 charity tosses and was 2-of-6 from the field. He also grabbed 11 rebounds in 30 minutes of action for his first double-double of the season.

Wabash trailed the Panthers by seven before going on a 9-2 run capped by a three-point play by Aaron Zimmerman to tie the game at 19-19. The Little Giants eventually took a 30-25 lead on baskets by Smith, Burkett, and a trey by Haltom before settling for a 39-32 halftime edge.

The Little Giants came out of the locker room in the second half on fire, scoring the first six points of the period before pushing their lead to 18 after four minutes of action. The Panthers would trim the advantage to 11 points but could draw no closer as Wabash picked up its first win of the season.

Wabash (1-1) will play the host Scots on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m.
