Wabash posted 14 top-eight finishes, including three individual victories, on the way to a second place finish at the 2009 DePauw Swimming Invitational.
Evan Rhinesmith, who spent Friday rewriting the Wabash record book, added another first place to his meet total Saturday by winning the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:09.92. Paul Buescher added a third place finish in the event by finishing in 2:16.90.
Eric Vaughn took first place in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall in 53.25. Craig Vetor also picked up first place honors, winning the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:44.89. Vetor added a fifth place finish in the 50 free (22.29). Robert Fozkos finished seventh (22.38).
“We had a great meet with a lot of really good performances top to bottom,” head coach Steve Barnes said. “I think as a squad we showed much more improvement than any other team at the meet. I think we stood out as a team. There were a lot of season and personal bests this weekend. This meet really gave us some things to think about as we go into the second half of the season and as we prepare for our Florida training trip. We’re happy but not satisfied. We still have some distance to go but we can definitely see the light.
“Rhinesmith’s three individual victories were tremendous. Vaughn’s win in the 100 backstroke was fantastic. Eric came off a not-so-hot meet to really finish strong. Adam Current posted some impressive times, as well.”
One of Current’s top swims came in the 100-yard butterfly, where he took second place with a time of 52.23. David Birrer finished fourth in the finals of that race with a time of 52.90.
Elijah Sanders was third in the 400-yard individual medley (4:24.19). Logan Rice finished fifth (4:27.37), while Pete Hewitt was seventh (4:35.52). Chad Woods took fourth place in the mile swim (17:34.71). Sanders was seventh (17:50.58).
Wabash scored 689 points, trailing the host DePauw University Tigers in first place in the team scoring with 759 points. Wittenberg was third (643), while Rhodes College took fourth (333). Illinois Wesleyan (272.5), Rose-Hulman (252), Transylvania (210), Monmouth (199.5), Millikin (142), and Franklin (56) finished fifth through tenth.
