Three Little Giants Advance at Midwest Wrestling Classic

Wabash wrestlers Jake Strausbaugh, Johnny Dillon, and Josh Boyer all advanced to the second day of competition at the 2010 Midwest Wrestling Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis.

Strausbaugh (right) entered the two-day tournament ranked eighth at 141 pounds. He opened Saturday's first round with a 17-6 major decision over Jon Gappmaier from Mesa State. Strausbaugh upset the number one seed in round two, defeating Corey Youngblood from Central Missouri 11-9 to advance to the championship semifinals on Sunday. Strausbaugh will face fifth-seeded Josh Hensely from Adams State in the semis.

Dillon (left) was seeded seventh at 149 pounds, and started with a pin 2:33 into his opening match against Adam Ulmer from Manchester. Dillon received a medical forfeit from Newberry's Mike Rogers in the next round to set up Sunday's championship semifinal bout against third-seeded Mitch Smith from West Liberty.

 

 

 

 

Boyer (right) scored a pin at the 5:55 in his first round bout against Decouris Leavell from Campbellsville before losing 17-9 to fifth-seeded Brandon Davis from Ashland in the second round. Boyer rallied for a 7-6 victory over Olivet's Justin Fleeson in the consolation bracket, then received a forfeit from fourth-seeded Russell Weekley to stay alive for Sunday's competition.

The tournament concludes Sunday at Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis.
