Newcomers Ian Leonard and Elliott Dewey picked up individual wins Saturday in their first collegiate tennis matches at Wabash. Leonard scored a singles win in the Little Giants' 6-3 loss to UW-La Crosse, while Dewey joined Leonard as a singles winner in a 5-4 loss at Augustana.
Leonard picked up a straight sets 6-4, 6-4 victory in the fifth flight against La Crosse. Sophomore Lewis Towne added a -5, 6-1 win at number six singles. Dewey and Towne combined to win 8-3 at number three doubles to gain a third team point for Wabash.
Dewey forced three sets in his match in the fourth flight of singles play against Augustana's Chris Mullin. The Wabash freshman lost the first set 5-7 before rallying for scores of 6-3, 6-3 in the final two sets to take the victory. Leonard defeated Jack Cullen 7-5, 7-6.
Towne and Dewey improved to 2-0 at number three doubles with an 8-5 win against Geoff Schoon and Cullen. Augustana scored the final victory of the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win at number six singles to squeeze out the one-point team victory.
Wabash (0-2) returns to action Saturday with two home North Coast Athletic Conference matches. The Little Giants face Ohio Wesleyan University and Earlham College beginning at 9 a.m. at the Collett Tennis Cener.
