Records Fall Again For Wabash Track & Field

School records fell in two different meets over the weekend. Jake Zielinski, John Haley, Garett Bonk, and Wes Chamblee destroyed the old mark in the 1600-meter run Friday night at Ohio State University, while Justin Allen set a new mark in the 1000-meter run at Saturday’s DePauw Invitational. The Little Giants took the team title at DePauw with several top-five finishes.

The Little Giants competed in two events at Friday night’s OSU Tune-Up Invitational. The 1600-meter relay posted a new Wabash record of 3:21.75, breaking the old mark of 3:24.78 set seven days earlier at Indiana University. Freshman Jake Waterman took first place in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.14, while Kevin McCarthy was second with a time of 1:56.23.
Waterman and McCarthy cranked up their efforts Saturday at DePauw, both setting new meet records while posting the fastest times of any Division III freshmen or sophomore runners in the 800. Waterman’s time of 1:52.88 was good for first place and the quickest freshman time of season, while sophomore McCarthy took second at 1:53.45 for the fastest time by a sophomore in DIII. Both times hit the provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA DIII Championship meet, while Waterman missed the automatic qualifying time by 8/100ths of a second.
Allen (left) was joined by four other Wabash runners in the top-six places of the 1000-meter race. Allen’s first place time of 2:35.62 set a new Little Giant indoor record. Seth Einterz finished second with a time of 2:36.04. Donavan White took third (2:39.31), while Colin Dunlap was fifth (2:42.79). Micah Milliman finished in sixth place (2:45.83). Einterz added a victory in the 3000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 8:48.41. McCarthy was fourth with a time of 8:57.56.
Freshman Matt Knox narrowly missed a provisional qualifying mark in the pole vault, winning the event by clearing 4.64 meters (15 feet, 2-3/4 inches). The provisional mark is 4.65 meters. Josh Sparks took third place by clearing 3.70 meters (12 feet, 1-1/2 inches).
Emmanuel Aouad was one of four Wabash runners to reach the finals of the 55-meter hurdles. Aouad finished second (7.82), while Haley took fourth (8.15). Patrick Posthauer grabbed sixth place (8.24), with Billy Rosson adding a seventh-place finish (8.52).
Kenny Farris ran to a third place finish in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:08.43. Sheridan took second in the 400-meter dash (51.56), while Chet Riddle was seventh (52.58). Wes Chamblee was third in the 200-meter dash (23.20), while Sheridan posted another solid finish with a third after crossing the line in 23.30.
Matt Scheller took fifth place in the weight throw (13.12 meters; 43 feet, ½ inches) and sixth in the shot put (13.36 meters; 43 feet, 10 inches). Vann Hunt added a fifth place finish in the triple jump (11.98 meters; 39 feet, 3-3/4 inches).
Wabash scored a total of 141.5 points to win the team competition at DePauw. Bellermine was second (107), followed by Cumberlands (86), Rhodes (78), DePauw (72.5), Huntington (68), Earlham (65), Centre (35), Lindsey Wilson (34), and Vincennes (17).
