Baseball Drops Season-Opening Games in Alabama

Wabash opened its 2010 baseball season at 9-1 Birmingham-Southern Saturday afternoon. The Little Giants fell 9-1 in game one before dropping game two 15-2.

Trailing 1-0 in game one after the first inning of the opener, the Little Giants strung together three consecutive singles, tying the game on David Seibel's RBI single to score John Holm. The Panthers rallied for three runs in the third and sixth innings to go with single runs in the fourth and fifth for the 9-1 win.

Wabash fell behind 5-0 in game two before Chris Deig blasted his first career home run over the right field fence --- a two-run shot that scored Brian Lares and brought the Little Giants to within three runs. Once again BSC answered with a run in the third before exploding for nine over the final three innings.

Sophomore shortstop John Pennington was 2-for-5 at the plate with a double. Tanner Coggins and Joe Johnson joined Seibel, Lares, and Deig as each had two hits over the two games.

Keegan Leckrone took the loss in game one, working five innings while allowing six runs on six hits. Brian Van Duyn took the loss in game two after throwing four innings with 10 hits and nine runs.

Wabash (0-2) will play 11th-ranked Adrian College Sunday afternoon in a single nine-inning game at Birmingham-Southern before closing out the weekend series against the Panthers in a final nine-inning contest in the afternoon.
