John Holm blasted three home runs and produced 10 RBI to lead Wabash to an 11-1 win over Eureka and an 18-8 victory against the University of Dallas.
Holm (right) crushed two home runs in the morning game against Eureka, going 2-for-4 with six RBI. John Pennington added three hits to the Little Giants' 11 total base knocks in the game.
Freshman pitcher Chis Widup pitched a gem in his first career start. Widup (below left), whose family is originally from the Dallas area, enjoyed the homecoming by working seven innings while scattering six hits with one earned run allowed. He struck out nine batters and walked four of the 29 batters he faced.
The Little Giants trailed 1-0 before Holm crushed a pitch to right field that left the park and cleared the batting cages beyond the fence to put Wabash in front 2-1. The Little Giants added a run in the third, then exploded for six runs in the fourth. Freshman Montana Timmons hit his second homer of the season as the leadoff hitter to start the scoring. Joe Johnson walked and stole second, scoring on an RBI single by David Seibel. Pennington added his third hit of the game two batters later to bring home Seibel. Tanner Coggins took a walk before Holm blasted his second home run of the game to give Wabash a 9-1 lead.
Wabash added two more runs in the sixth on a fielder's choice by Holm and a sacrifice fly by Nathan Schrader.
Holm opened the second inning of game two with his third homer of the day to put Wabash up 1-0. Seibel added an RBI single later in the inning ahead of an RBI double by freshman catcher Frank Ruvoli. Chris Deig's triple produced a run in the fourth before scoring on a single by Seibel. A six-run fifth inning, along with four in the seventh and three in the eighth, led Wabash to a Thursday sweep.
Brian Van Duyn earned his first win of the season, pitching 5-1/3 innings while allowing seven hits and three earned runs with no walks and two strikeouts. Jeff Soller, Eric Foust, and Brittain Warner combined for 2-2/3 innings on the mound with three runs and five hits.
Wabash (3-5) completes its spring break trip with two games at Austin College on Friday and two at Bacone College in Oklahoma Saturday.
