Wabash Takes Fourth at 2010 Kerry Seward Tourney

Sophomore Lewis Towne took second place, and freshman Ian Leonard added a third place finish Sunday afternoon to help the Wabash tennis team finish fourth in the 2010 Kerry Seward Tennis Tournament.

Towne earned two wins Saturday in the opening rounds of the sixth flight of singles play. He scored a 6-1, 6-0 win in his first match against Transylvania's Tyler Pewitt, then picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Rose-Hulman's Seth Hendrickson. Towne faced off against Coe's Kyle Tucker in the finals, falling 6-1, 6-1 to take second place.

Leonard won his first match at number five singles, defeating Billy Sessions from Albion 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. A three-set loss to eventual flight winner Matt Whiteside from Carthage (6-7, 7-6, 10-4) sent Leonard to the third-place match against Transylvania's Clinton Colliver. Leonard took a two-set 6-2, 6-4 victory to score six team points for the Little Giants.

Zach Lowry took fourth place at number one singles, winning two consecutive matches after falling in the flight's opening contest. Elliot Dewey added a fourth place finish with a 2-1 record at number four singles.

Dewey and Evan Bayless took second place in the second flight of Saturday's doubles championship matches. The duo earned an 8-5 in their opening match, then followed with an 8-6 win before losing in the title competition 8-4. Ritter and Towne went 1-1 at number three doubles before an injury brought Lowry in to replace Towne in the final bout. Ritter and Lowry went on for an 8-5 victory to take fourth place.

The Little Giants scored a total of 40 points, trailing third-place Albion (41 points) by one point. Carthage took the team title with a total of 65 points, narrowly defeating Coe in second place with 64 points. Rose-Hulman was fith (36 points), while Ohio Northern (32 points), Transylvania (28 points), and Hanover (17 points) completed the team scoring.
