Naperville Connection Gives Wabash Two Wins

Two Naperville, Illinois products led the Wabash baseball team to a pair of victories Friday afternoon. Freshman pitcher Chris Widup picked up his second complete-game victory in as many starts courtesy of a 9-0 win by Wabash in game one against Robert Morris College – Springfield Friday afternoon. Sophomore John Holm tallied a total of six RBI for the day, including two in the Little Giants' 9-4 win in game two.

Widup (2-0) scattered seven hits along with two walks while recording six strikeouts in the seven-inning victory. While the rookie right-hander was blanking the Eagles, his Wabash teammates had no problem picking up some early runs.

Holm went 3-for-4 at the plate, adding four RBI along with his 10th home run of the season. He singled home a run in the first inning, then blasted a three-run homer in the second following a walk to Joe Johnson, a single by Brian Lares, and an RBI single by Tanner Coggins. Wabash added two more runs in the third, starting with a solo homer by Chris Deig --- his second of the season. John Pennington brought the second run home with a sacrifice fly, scoring Johnson for the second time in the game. Coggins added the final run with sacrifice fly in the fifth to bring home Lares.

Holm picked up two more RBI in game two with a single in the fourth and a double in the sixth. The six RBI give Holm 38 for the season, putting him one away from tying the Wabash record of 39 set by Josh Stanton ’03 in 2001. Holm is also one home run away from the Wabash single-season mark of 11 set by Matt Wilhelm ’01 in 2000.

Montana Timmons went 3-for-4 in game two with two RBI, joining Holm and Deig each with two RBI as well. Luke Zinsmaster evened his overall record at 1-1 by throwing a complete game in his first start of the season. He struck out six while allowing three earned runs, seven hits and one walk in seven innings of work.

Wabash (11-12) is scheduled to play two more games Saturday against the Eagles at Mud Hollow Field. First pitch is slated for noon.
