Wabash Wins DePauw Track Invite

The Wabash track and field team set three meet records and posted 23 top-eight finishes at Saturday's DePauw Outdoor Invitational. The Little Giants won the team title, nipping Indiana Wesleyan by one point.

Jake Waterman and Kevin McCarthy finished 1-2 in the 800-meter run, each besting the previous meet record. Waterman won the event with a time of 1:53.51, faster than the old mark of 1:54.73 set two years earlier. McCarthy's time of 1:53.75 was also faster than the old record, as well. Wes Chamblee's second place time of 54.48 in the 400-meter hurdles also topped the meet record in that event (54.62). Chamblee was a half-second off the winning time of 54.01 of Sutton Coleman of Rose-Hulman. Wabash freshman Billy Rosson took third (56.59).

The Little Giants' 1600-meter relay team also set a new meet mark with a winning time of 3:19.33, eclipsing the previous record of 3:19.48.

Micah Milliman added a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a final time of 10:23.73. Emmanuel Aouad finished second in the 110-meter hurdles (15.35), while Evan Groninger grabbed second place in the javelin throw with a mark of 50.66 meters (166 feet, two inches). Wabash took second in the 400-meter relay (42.94), as well.

Matt Knox was third in the pole vault (4.10 meters; 13 feet, 5-1/4 inches). Matt Scheller took fourth in the shot put (13.51 meters; 44 feet, four inches). Garett Bonk finished fifth in the 400 meter dash (49.90), barely ahead of teammate Jake Zielinski in sixth (50.20), while Jacob Ezell finished eighth (50.70). John Haley took fifth in the 100-meter dash (11.54) while Austin Hodges tied for sixth (11.58). 

The Little Giants scored a total of 111-1/2 points, edging Indiana Wesleyan with a total of 110-1/2 points. Vincennes was third with 110 points. Rose-Hulman (89), Case Western (76), DePauw (62), Valparaiso (57), Illinois Wesleyan (53), Lewis (39), Manchester (15), and Wittenberg (12) completed the team scoring.
