Weekend Sweep Puts Tennis Close to Record

Head coach Jason Hutchison's 2009-2010 Wabash College tennis team may be young, but the Little Giants find themselves one win away from tying the single season records for wins after scoring two victories on the road Saturday. Wabash defeated Wittenberg 6-3 in the morning match before coasting to a 5-0 win in the second over Thomas More.

This year's Wabash team has recorded 14 victories despite playing without a senior on the roster and only one junior in the regular lineup. The team needs one victory to match the 15 wins posted by George Davis' teams in 1993 and 1995.

The Little Giants scored their 13th victory of the season by opening with an 8-5 at number one doubles against Wittenberg by Evan Bayless and Elliot Dewey. Lewis Towne and Ian Leonard earned their fourth doubles win of the year with an 8-6 win in the third flight.

Ricky Ritter scored a straight sets, 6-1, 6-4 win at number three singles. Dewey added a 6-0, 7-5 win at number four doubles. Towne picked up a 6-4, 7-5 win at fifth singles, while Towne closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win at six singles.

Wabash lost only one game to Thomas More in the second match. Towne and Leonard had no problems with an 8-0 win at number three doubles, while Ritter and Gunderman were also 8-0 winners at number two doubles. Bayless and Dewey scored an 8-1 win at number one doubles.

Leonard and Towne swept number five and six singles, respectively, with both posting 6-0, 6-0 victories.
